Exercise 4: Follow Up

As with an information interview, take some time to document new information you learned. Record the date, the name of the person you spoke with, key messages they shared about the company or industry, additional people they suggested talking to, etc. Within 48 hours, send a thank you note. Appreciating the interviewer’s time will help to build a long-lasting, constructive relationship. Also, this is your chance to clarify or add additional information, or to respond to any issues that surfaced during the interview.

Thank you for your invaluable insight into (subject). I appreciate your taking time out of your day to share your experiences and ideas with me.

In reflecting on our conversation, (respond to any issues that arose during the interview, referring to a strength, accomplishment, skill, talent, etc.)

As we discussed, my qualifications are in line with your requirements:
You require: I offer:
· (Restate a requirement) · (Reiterate what you have to offer)
· Etc. · Etc.

NOTE: Handwritten notes on a typed thank you letter add a personal touch and tend to increase credibility. Try adding, “Thanks again!” or “Look forward to seeing you soon!” to the bottom of the page in your own writing.

“I’ve heard that after an interview you should send a thank you.” Yes, it’s very appropriate and it’s best to do an actual note. We kind of equate email with a phone call. So it’s still best to do a personal note. We’ve got some samples of some templates of some thank you notes. So when you’re in the interview you should get the business card, the person’s name, the address of the business. Each person you talk to you , you should write a note. One thing I suggest is our format for standard thank you notes but again, you want to use your own words that you’re comfortable with. And then if something interesting happened during one person’s conversation, you could write a little hand written note, something to tie it back, “P.S. I enjoyed our conversation about the movie we watched.” Any little thing that will help connect. “What’s the timeframe you should send a thank you letter?” I would say within 48 hours after your interview you should have that written and out in the mail while it’s still fresh in their minds. “Should it be handwritten or typed?” Either really. The format I have in the toolbox is typed out but a handwritten note is very personal.
